For over two decades, we have walked alongside African American women in Alameda County — building spaces of healing, breaking the silence around mental health, and nurturing the wholeness every woman deserves.
A Legacy of Innovation and Inspiration
The Black Women’s Media and Wellness Project has operated in Alameda County for over 20 years, serving the needs of African American women in addressing co-occurring conditions and the environmental risk factors that shape our communities — from the proliferation of liquor stores and food insecurity to over-policing, lack of employment, underfunded schools, and violence. What began as a project countering stereotypical alcohol advertising has grown into a movement addressing the deep stress of high-risk environments, reaching women who are suffering, at-risk, or in recovery from Substance Use Disorder, Domestic Violence, and Homelessness.
At the heart of BWMWP is a fierce belief that every Black woman deserves to be still, to be heard, and to heal. Through quarterly Be Still retreats, our Crossing the Invisible Line magazine, a thriving Book Club, and a dedicated Community Advisory Board, we create spaces where women of color can reclaim their mental, physical, and emotional health — on their own terms, in their own voices, supported by a community that sees them fully.

Crossing The Invisible Line
Some things go unsaid for too long. Crossing the Invisible Line exists to change that.
Published by the Black Women’s Media and Wellness Project, this magazine was created to amplify the voices of women who have carried the weight of mental stress — often in silence. Each issue explores what that stress looks like, where it comes from, and the many paths toward healing. More than a publication, Crossing the Invisible Line is an open invitation: to end the silence, speak honestly, and step into a healthier dialogue — together.
CURRENT ISSUE Crossing the Invisible Line IV: Addressing Toxic Positivity
Some conversations are still considered taboo in our communities — and that’s exactly why we’re having them. This issue takes an honest look at the pressure to perform happiness and suppress pain, and what it truly takes to heal.
With gratitude to our contributors: Latea’s Epiphany, Dr. Carmen McNeil, Dr. Renisha Coleman, Press Body Spa, HHREC staff, the Be Still Community, and the BWM Community Advisory Board.
